Naperville Does Free Better Than Most
One of the best things about living in Naperville is the sheer amount of quality things you can do without spending a dime. Whether you are new to the area, looking for something different this weekend, or just trying to keep the family busy without breaking the bank, Naperville delivers.
Here is a local’s guide to the best free things to do in Naperville, plus one addition you might not have thought of.
Walk the Riverwalk
The Naperville Riverwalk is a 1.75-mile path along the DuPage River that runs through the heart of downtown. It is beautiful in every season, with covered bridges, public art, and landscaped gardens. In the warmer months, there are often free concerts, festivals, and events along the route. In the fall, the colors alone are worth the walk. It is one of Naperville’s signature landmarks for a reason.
Explore the Knoch Knolls Nature Center
Tucked into one of Naperville’s many park district properties, Knoch Knolls Nature Center offers hiking trails, a nature center with free exhibits, and some of the most peaceful scenery in DuPage County. It is a great spot for families, runners, or anyone who needs a break from screens. The trails are easy enough for kids but long enough to feel like a real outing.
Visit the Naperville Public Library
The Naperville Public Library system is consistently ranked among the best in the country. Beyond books, the libraries offer free events, workshops, and programs for every age group. Check their event calendar for author talks, kids’ programs, and community events. The Nichols Library downtown is especially worth a visit.
Check Out the Downtown Scene
Downtown Naperville is one of the best walkable downtown areas in the Chicago suburbs. Window shopping, people watching, and exploring the local boutiques and restaurants is its own kind of entertainment. Grab a coffee and wander. On weekends, there are often farmers markets, art walks, and community events happening in and around the downtown area.
Hit the Park District Trails
The Naperville Park District maintains over 130 parks and miles of trails. Centennial Park, Springbrook Prairie, and the trails along the DuPage River are all excellent for walking, running, or biking. If you have kids, the playgrounds at Centennial Park and Commissioners Park are top tier.
Catch a Free Community Event
Naperville has a packed calendar of free events throughout the year. From summer concerts in the park to holiday celebrations downtown, there is almost always something happening. Follow the City of Naperville and Naperville Park District social channels to stay up to date.
Try a Free CrossFit Class
Here is one more free thing to add to your weekend list: your first class at CrossFit 630 is on the house. Seriously. If you have been curious about CrossFit, or if you are just looking for something new to try this weekend, this is your invitation.
CrossFit 630 is located at 670 W. 5th Ave in Naperville and has been part of the community since 2013. The class is one hour, fully coached, and scaled to your level regardless of experience. You will get a real workout, meet great people, and see why so many Naperville residents have made CrossFit 630 their gym.
Book your free class at crossfit630.com/freetrial. It might be the best free thing you do this weekend.
