5-Easy Steps - Couch to CrossFit


Many of us run into obstacles each and everyday that keep us from trying something new. We either think it's going to be too hard or we care too much about what others will think about us. My challenge to you is to step outside of your comfort zone and try something invigorating and do it for yourself. Who knows, you might just love it. Here's an easy to follow guide for trying CrossFit and having fun with it.

1. STOP MAKING EXCUSES ABOUT TIME:

You have time and you should always make time for yourself. This is a life essential. Keep your mind and your body in the best shape you can. There's a direct correlation between the two. You can sacrafice an hour 3-5 days per week to better your life. The benefits of being a healthy individual are long felt in many aspects of ones general life. Budget your time wisely and find a CrossFit box near you and check it out. You'll find one that fits into your schedule. If you're on the road a lot, guess what, there are thousands of CrossFit Affiliates all over the world. They will be more than happy to have you visit. 2. DON'T BE SCARED:

There is an obvious feeling of apprehension when starting something new, but after you walk in the door the first day, the hardest part is done. Traditionally CrossFit gyms are not like other fitness facilities in the fact they are more of a community and will welcome you with open arms. The hardest part is walking in. Trainers are there to observe and correct movement patterns. They are there to teach you how to properly move your body and be safe. You and the training staff are there for a common goal, make you a better version of you.

3. RESEARCH & CHOOSE THE GYM FOR YOU:

Take a look online, call their number, ask questions, drop in and observe a class. These are things that can be done to see if it's somewhere you'd like to train. Most CrossFit boxes even allow for a free introductory class. Sign up and take it. Get a feel for the trainers, the equipment, the other members. Even though the methodology is similar at each CrossFit, not all are created equal. You'll hit it off with a trainer or you'll really enjoy the community, there will be clean ones, dirty ones and ones with nice smelling bathrooms, it's the one where you feel welcomed and with great training you'll stay.

4. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE "IN-SHAPE" TO TRY CROSSFIT:

Now that you've choosen a gym and you've made it through the door, jump right in. Most CrossFit gyms have an introductory course ("OnRamp", "Foundations", Jump Start", "101", etc...) and that's a great opportunity for you to lower the fear of trying this new thing. The trainers will walk you through everything. You may not be where you want to be as far as fitness, but that's the point of going to CrossFit. The methodology, proper programming, help with nutrition and the overall accountability you'll get at a great box will help you acheive better fitness. If you put in the work, it'll pay of in leaps and bounds. Everything is scaleable to each individuals ability and fitness. The nice thing about CrossFit is that everything we do is measurable and repeatable. You will know if you're getting more fit as you do things faster, lift more and look better naked.

5. SURPRISE YOURSELF:

Set goals and crush them. Whether it's to run a 5K, half or full marathon, obstacle race, bike ride, play more with your kids outdoors, hunting or to check any number of things off your bucket list, it should all start with a solid foundation of fitness and a sharp mind. You will surpise yourself regularly when you commit to trying things. CrossFit has a profound ability to challenge you not only physically, but mentally as well. Push your limits, find your limits, fail once in a while. It's okay to fail when you're pushing yourself to do things that you've never done before. You need to know those limits to be able to break through them. Surprise yourself!
